What is the Beep Test? (also known as the 20-meter shuttle run or the Multi-Stage Fitness Test).
The test is a continuous aerobic capacity assessment where athletes run back and forth between two lines set 20 meters apart.
- The Beeps: A recording plays "beeps" at specific intervals. The athlete must reach the opposite line before the next beep sounds.
- The Levels: As the test progresses, the time between beeps gets shorter, forcing the athlete to run faster.
- The End: The test ends when an athlete fails to reach the line before the beep twice in a row.
Why It’s Important to College Coaches
Coaches use this test for three main reasons that go beyond just "being in shape":
- V02 Max Measurement: It provides a reliable estimate of an athlete’s maximum oxygen uptake. This tells a coach if a player has the "engine" to play a full 90-minute match or high-intensity shifts without their performance dropping.
- Mental Toughness: The Beep Test is designed to be grueling. Coaches watch to see who fights through the "red zone" when their lungs are burning and who gives up early when it gets uncomfortable.
- Accountability: Often, coaches send athletes home for the summer with fitness packets. Running the Beep Test on the first day of preseason tells the coach exactly who put in the work over the break and who didn't.

Speed Agility Strength Power Conditioning TRAINING 2025
